Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia confirms Megis Kardava’s detention Ukrainian law enforcers have detained former Georgia’s military police head Megis Kardava on the basis of the mediation of Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office, - Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has reported.

‘Under the mediation presented by the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia, Ukraine’s law enforcer agencies arrested former Georgian high official Megis Kardava, being on internationally wanted list since February 13, 2013.

Extradition detention is applied towards Megis Kardava under the decision of Ukraine’s competent court and the issue of its extradition to Georgia will be resolved under the Ukrainian legislation,’ reads the statement.

Megis Kardava faces charges for different crimes and was sentenced to 9 years in jail in absentia.


Extraditing procedures envisaged by the law are underway towards the detained former high official,’ the Prosecutor’s Office reports.

Megis Kardava was search for on the basis of numerous judgements of conviction rendered by the Georgian joint courts, namely:

He was convicted in the so-called ‘Prison Riot Case’ under Article 1443§2(a, b, d, e, g) of the Criminal Code of Georgia (CCG) and is sentenced to deprivation of liberty for a term of 3 years and 9 months;

He was convicted of torture of prisoners (in so-called ‘Navtlughi Special Operation Case’) under Article 1441§2 of the CCG and is sentenced to deprivation of liberty for a term of 7 years and 6 months;

He was convicted in the so-called ‘Barrels Case under Article 138§3(c) of the CCG, Article 1441§2(a, e, g) of the same Code, Article 143§3(a) of the same Code. He is sentenced to deprivation of liberty for a term of 9 years;

He was convicted in the case of B.R.’s torture under Article 1443§2(a, b ,g) of the CCG and is sentenced to deprivation of liberty for a term of 3 years and 9 months;
He was convicted in the case of torture of Colonel Sergo Tetradze under Article 1441§2(a, b, e, g) of the Criminal Code of Georgia, Article 143§3(a) and para 3(b) of the same Article, and Article 333§1. He is sentenced to deprivation of liberty for a term of 9 years.

For the time being, five criminal cases of Megis Kardava are being examined by the joint courts in his absentia:

Embezzlement of state funds, crime specified under Article 182§2(a, d) of the Criminal Code of Georgia and under §3(b) of the same Article;

The case of torture of Eldar Kobalia, Koba Mantkava and Merab Kolbaia, under Article 1441§2(a, d, e, g) of the Criminal Code of Georgia;

The case of torture of Malkhaz Arkania, which he committed while holding the position of the deputy Head of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Regional Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia. In this case he is charged under Article1441§2(a, e, g) of the Criminal Code of Georgia;

The case of illegal imprisonment and torture of Elberd Koberidze, under Article 143§(c), Article 143§4(a) and Article 1441§2(a, b)-§3 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

Extradition proceeding prescribed by the law are now being carried out against Megis Kardava.
