Family of Georgian soldier disappeared during training in Gonio reports on attempts of extortion towards them Family of Georgian soldier Giorgi Nanetashvili who disappeared on August 16 in Gonio during trainings has reported on attempts of extortion towards them.

Giorgi Nanetashvili’s parents – Gela and Sesili Nanetashvili live in the village of Ruisi, Kareli District, Shida Kartli region.

‘There were no calls but letters were sent to my aunt who lives in Tbilisi. A courier delivered the letters to her. There were all four letters that read as if our missing son wrote us as if he was in Turkey and in terrible need of money. The letters were sent from Turkey,’ Gela Nanetashvili has declared.

The missing soldier’s mother Sesili Nanetashvili says she personally met with one of the extorters.

‘Initially, they demanded 39 000 USD, afterwards – in the following letter – 27 000 USD… Once we got the letters we immediately contacted with the relevant agencies and acted as agreed with them. We told the sender that we had not this amount. In the last letter ‘my son’ asked for any of the money we had… As we did not send the money the extorters contacted us and I even met with the ‘mediator’… It was very difficult,’ the missing soldier’s mother has remarked.

According to the family, the frauds are from Ozurgeti, Chiatura and Tbilisi. They have been detained.

The divers disappeared a year ago at the sea in Gonio, Adjara, when they were involved in military trainings.

As IPN has been informed, the extortion fact was solved several months ago. Defense Ministry and Prosecutor’s Office held a joint operation to detain the extorters.

The soldiers still remain missing.
