The topics on HIV/AIDS prevention, situation with regard to HIV epidemics in Georgia, HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination, global and national policy and strategies on HIV/AIDS response and the UN role in strengthening the HIV/AIDS response in Georgia were discussed at a seminars held at the Parliament of Georgia on 19-20 October. The seminars were conducted in the framework of UN Week. The seminars were developed with joint efforts of MDG Parliament Group of Georgia, the Health Care and Social Issues Committee of the Parliament, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), and conducted in the framework of the UN Cares Programme funded by the UN Joint Team on HIV/AIDS in Georgia. The opening remarks were made by Mr. George Tsereteli, Deputy Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Mr. Otar Toidze, the Health Care and Social Issues Committee of the Parliament, Ms. Magda Anikashvili, Member of Parliament, Ms. Tamar khomasuridze, UNFPA/Georgia Assistant Representative and Ms. Lia Tavadze, Social Mobilization Advisor, UNAIDS. Nowadays, combating HIV/AIDS is one of the most important challenges for the health care system worldwide. Raising awareness of the parliament staffers will further contribute to the refinement of the legislative and political environment to tackle the aforementioned problems and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
