The exhibition will be held within the frameworks of the UN Joint Programme for Gender Equality to celebrate International Women’s Day. “Deprived of Adolescence” underlines the acute problem of early marriages in Georgia. Various photos depicting child brides reveal the harsh reality prevailing in the country.
Daro Sulakauri is a young Georgian photographer. Her works are highly recognized by Georgian and foreign professionals. Daro sulakauri is a winner of several prestigious awards, including EU prize for journalism received in 2016. Her photo project “Deprived of Adolescence” explores the depth of the problem within the everyday life of ordinary citizens of Georgia observed by a photographer.
The harmful practice of early marriage is a countrywide problem in Georgia. As UNFPA Georgia Assistant Representative Ms. Lela Bakradze emphasizes, “Early marriage yields grave consequences for girls, excluding them from social life, depriving basic rights, and preventing from completing education. Pregnancy and childbirth during adolescence poses risk to maternal health and the baby. Causes of early marriage are complex, therefore, multifaceted work on the policy and legislative level is crucial for addressing the harmful practice, as well as working with communities and the adolescents for changing perceptions and attitudes towards early marriages.”
The exhibition will once again accentuate the need for action for preventing the harmful practice.
