European Georgia: Additional criteria should be developed for the selection of judges of the Supreme Court

The European Georgia party has presented several initiatives on the issue of justice reform.

One of the members of the party, Otar Kakhidze stated at the press conference today that the Supreme Court should develop additional criteria for the selection of judges of the Supreme Court.

"Our initiative package includes several directions. One of the directions is to develop more criteria for the selection of judges of the Supreme Court. The violation established by the Strasbourg Court shall be directly envisaged as an obstacle to the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court.

Secondly, critical conclusions and recommendations of international organizations' observation organizations should also be one of the criteria. At the same time, a working group should be set up under the Legal Committee, which should include representatives of the non-governmental sector, the Public Defender's Office and the Lawyers’ Association," said Otar Kakhidze.

According to him, the working group should have the right to interview applicants if necessary; the report prepared by the Group shall be publicized and submitted to the Legal Committee for consideration.

"At the same time, the opposition should have a guaranteed time to talk to the candidate in question-answer mode”, Kakhidze said.
