Public Defender says parliament should not consider submitted judicial candidates of Supreme Court

I think that the list of judicial candidates of the Supreme Court submitted to the parliament should not be considered, - Public Defender Nino Lomjaria told journalists.

According to Lomjaria, the process of nomination of judges was incompatible with the Constitution.

"We believe that the process, nomination of judges of the Supreme Court, was incompatible with the Constitution. I think that the list of judges submitted to the Parliament should not be considered. We see a few problems - of course, transparency of the process is problematic. Every person with relevant experience and qualifications should be able to be involved in the process.

We have come to the present problem because no significant legislative amendments or regulations have been developed over the years. This is the result of concentration of too much power in the High Council of Justice”, Lomtaria said.

The Public Defender considers that in the working group which will develop criteria for the selection of judges, should include representatives of NGOs and the Ombudsman's Office.
