23 policemen, injured in Pankisi, remain at hospital

The Ministry of Internal Affairs launched an investigation into the attack on policemen in the Pankisi Gorge and the damage to police vehicles under Article 353 and Article 187 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, - reads the statement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

"35 officers of the Kakheti Regional Police were mobilized in connection with the resumption of construction of a small hydro-power plant in the Pankisi Gorge.

A group of locals attacked the police with sticks and stones, after which additional police forces were mobilized. Part of the locals resisted the law enforcers, as a result of which, police vehicles were damaged, police officers and citizens were injured.

In total, 55 people were provided with medical aid, including 38 policemen and 17 citizens. 23 policemen remain at Telavi hospitals until now," reads the statement.
