Gurjaani district court has sentenced a pretrial custody to a 40-year-old man for raping a child under 16.

The incident occurred in Lagodekhi municipality, Kakheti region of eastern Georgia. The girl, who gave birth, accuses her relative of raping her. Lia Khuroshvili, lawyer of the “Human Rights” Center”, says the miner learned about her pregnancy when she felt ill at school and was taken to hospital, where the girl gave birth on the same day.

The detainee, who pleads not guilty, faces from 10 to 13 years in prison.
