Investigation launched into threats made against Public Defender

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation into threats made against the Public Defender via internet, - reads the statement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

"On June 14, 2019, during the demonstration underway in front of the Governmental Administration, 28 counter-demonstrators were detained by police. In addition, the Ministry of Internal Affairs launched an investigation under Article 154 of the Criminal Code of Georgia in connection with interference with the journalistic activities during the demonstration. Investigation has also been launched in connection with the threatening messages against the Public Defender released via internet under Article 151 of the Criminal Code. All necessary investigative and procedural actions will be conducted within the investigation.

As for the various events planned in the coming days, the police will protect freedom of assembly and freedom of expression of each person, regardless of his/her political views, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, etc.”, reads the statement.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs calls on participants of the events to observe law, otherwise police will act in accordance with its mandate.
