Majority of MPs supports motion of Prosecutor's Office regarding arrest of MP Nika Melia

The majority of MPs supported the motion of the Prosecutor's Office regarding the arrest of MP Nika Melia at the joint meeting of two Committees.

The motion was supported by 15 MPs, while 4 MPs voted against it. The issue had been discussed at the committee meeting for almost 6 hours.

The issue will be discussed at the plenary session later today.

Prosecutor’s Office charged Nika Melia, a member of the United National Movement (UNM), in connection with the June 20 developments yesterday.

“As far as you know, the Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation under Article 225 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, on charges of inciting and heading a mass violence, or participating in it, during the June 20-21 rally in front of the Parliament of Georgia in Tbilisi. Within the framework o the investigation, signs of crime have been identified in the actions of MP Nikanor Melia. He has been summoned to the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia to be formally charged,” the Prosecutor’s Office said.

According to the statement, the Prosecutor’s Office has already informed the Georgian legislative body about filing criminal charges against the MP.
