The European Union and Georgia are very close partners and friends, - European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Johannes Hahn said after a meeting with Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia.
As he noted, Georgia needs to continue reforms. In this regard, he particularly emphasized the rule of law.
Johannes Hahn also noted that in order to ensure fair environment for the 2020 elections, it is important to implement the OSCE recommendations.
“We have talked about the deepening of cooperation, especially by using the potential of the deep and comprehensive trade agreement, many opportunities that have not been used yet. This will further strengthen our cooperation," Hahn said.
According to him, the EU remains a firm supporter of successful reforms in Georgia.
“We agreed that these efforts should continue, especially in the area of the rule of law. The process of appointing judges to the Supreme Court is in the spotlight not only for Brussels but also for the capitals of EU member states. We are doing our best to focus on equal rights. We emphasized that implementation of recommendations issued by the OSCE, especially for the 2020 elections, will ensure pluralistic and equal media environment and transparent elections.
For us, Georgia is a leading country in terms of development and the rule of law in the eastern neighborhood and we want Georgia to maintain this status in the future too," Johannes Hahn said.
