Chairman of Constitutional Court publishes two documents certifying his higher education in law in response to Public Defender’s report

Zaza Tavadze, Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Georgia and a judicial candidate of the Supreme Court, has published two documents certifying his higher education in law.

Tavadze sent two documents to InterPressNews in response to the Public Defender's report that addresses shortcomings in the quality of the judicial candidates’ education.

“I welcome the report of the Ombudsman. We, Constitutional Court, together with the Ombudsman, have a great role in protecting human rights and freedom, and we have been closely cooperation in this field for the last 10 years,” Zaza Tvadze said.

The Public Defender of Georgia published a special report on the selection of Supreme Court judges today. According to the report, the High Council of Justice failed to properly check the candidates’ compliance with the legislative requirement, according to which, they should have at least master’s degree or an equivalent academic degree in the field of law.

“Compliance with the aforementioned legislative requirement should have been checked by the High Council of Justice at the initial stage of the process, before registering candidates.

However, it has been found out that both the list of 50 candidates and the candidates submitted to the Parliament include persons, master’s degrees of which (in the field of law) are either not properly certified, or raise serious questions”, reads the report.
