Salome Zurabishvili - Russian Federation has to pay 10 million euros to 1,500 Georgian citizens in compensation, we call on the Council of Europe to get actively involved in forcing Russia to comply with the court ruling

In 2019, the Grand Chamber ruled that the Russian Federation has to pay 10 million euros to 1,500 Georgian citizens in compensation. Russia has not yet fulfilled its commitment. Therefore, I would like to reiterate our government's call on the Council of Europe and its members to get actively involved in forcing Russia to comply with the court ruling immediately, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili said on Tuesday during her speech at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

According to the President, justice must be done.

“I have repeatedly pointed out Georgia's lawsuits at the European Court of Human Rights. I would like to draw your attention to the dispute between the two states : Georgia v. Russia.

Mass deportation of Georgian citizens from Russia in 2006 - this case was won by Georgia in 2014. Grand Chamber ruled that Russia has to pay 10 million euros in compensation to 1,500 Georgian citizens just on January 31, 2019. Russia has not yet fulfilled its commitment. Therefore, I would like to reiterate the call of our authorities to the Council of Europe and its members : to be actively involved in forcing Russia to execute a judicial decision immediately. The double standard is not only unacceptable but also damages the organization and its principles.

2008 Russia-Georgia War – a final hearing of this case was held in May 2018. We are still waiting for the court's decision. The whole Georgian society looks forward to achieving justice. This will serve as an example for others. Standards are the same for everyone. Justice must be done, ”Salome Zurabishvili said.
