Irakli Kobakhidze: In December, no later than 1 month after EU grants Georgia the candidate status, we will adopt a constitutional law by which the 2024 and subsequent parliamentary elections will be held under proportional system with a 2% threshold

In December, no later than 1 month after the European Union grants Georgia candidate status, the Parliament of Georgia will adopt a constitutional law in all three readings, according to which the 2024 and subsequent parliamentary elections will be held under fully proportional system and with a 2% electoral threshold, Georgian Dream chairman Irakli Kobakhidze stated at the briefing.

According to him, this decision will create an optimal political situation for the country.

"We take this political commitment on behalf of the political council of the party and the parliamentary majority before the European Council and the European Commission. We strongly believe that Georgia getting the candidate status will help reduce the degree of polarization in the country, after which a fully proportional electoral system with a 2% electoral threshold will create an optimal political situation for the state in 2024.

We are sure that we will completely defeat the National Movement with its satellites in 2024 even under the 2% threshold, which is a necessary condition for the peaceful, democratic and stable development of our country," said Kobakhidze.
