Giorgi Margvelashvili slams planned amendments to Law on Civil Service

A punishing and inquisitorial act has been issued for those people who have been serving the country for years, as if your are not civil servants,- President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili said while commenting on the draft of amendments to the “Law on Civil Service”.

“There are up to 100 persons at the Presidential Administration, who work according to the civil service standards and have nothing to do with political preferences. These are the topics we discussed in 90s. Since that time I partners have invested millions in this direction. There are such people at the Presidential Administration, who started their job during Gamsakhurdia’s [first President of Georgia] presidency and we are proud of these people. Presidents were replaced and these people were not. They have been serving for years and they deserve our gratitude. Suddenly, a punishing and inquisitorial act has been issued for those people, they say that you are not civil servants. You have been serving Georgia for years and suddenly, you are told that “you are not in a civil service according to our inquisitorial mentality. Neither Shevardnadze nor Saakashvili and I have had such an insulting idea, because, naturally, we should be grateful to these people. It's insulting to the state. It is not in line with any political theory, "Margvelashvili said.

According to the planned amendments to the recently enacted Law on Civil Service, the staff of Presidential Administration shall be transformed from civil servants into administrative personnel.
