Mark Clayton: Anything that limits, hinders or makes impossible the work of civil society would be extremely disturbing for us

The UK is a very strong supporter of democracy and human rights. Anything that limits, hinders or makes impossible the work of civil society would be extremely disturbing for us, - said the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Georgia, Mark Clayton, while commenting on the bill on "Foreign Transparency".

"My EU counterpart, Pawel Herczynski, as well as Charles Michel and the High Representative clearly stated the impact of this law on Georgia's European perspective. As for the United Kingdom, it is a very strong supporter of democracy and human rights, strongly believing that a vibrant, active civil society is a key component of any modern democracy. So, anything that limits, prevents or makes impossible its work would be extremely disturbing to us and we have already made it clear," the Ambassador noted.

According to him, the United Kingdom has been the biggest supporter of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity since the beginning of Georgia's independence.

"Sovereignty means making a choice. Although my country is no longer a member of the European Union, the United Kingdom supports Georgia's accession to the European Union and NATO, all public opinion polls show that the Georgian people want to join the European Union and NATO. All the major political parties state that their foreign policy goal is to join the EU and NATO, and your constitution states that you want to join the EU. So this is the sovereign choice of Georgia. It is up to Georgia to decide how it will interpret and what it will decide, the United Kingdom will support Georgia on this path," the Ambassador noted.
