Salome Zurabishvili: We have the prospect of starting EU accession negotiations at the end of this year, and that is what this law is fighting today - this law corresponds to the interests of Moscow

We have the prospect of starting EU accession negotiations at the end of this year, and that is what this law is fighting today, - the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, said in an interview with TV 5 Monde, while talking about the draft law on "Transparency of Foreign Influence".

According to Salome Zurabishvili, the reintroduction of the law corresponds to the interests of Moscow.

"I am concerned about the reintroduction of this law, which was rejected by the entire population of Georgia, which allowed us to receive the EU candidate status at the end of last year. We are on this path. We have the prospect of starting EU accession negotiations at the end of this year, and that is what this law is fighting today, and not only that, but a whole series of laws that are against the EU pathe. This decision corresponds to the interests of Moscow", said Salome Zurabishvili.

According to her, the said law is against all those who fought for the independence of Georgia for years and at the same time it is a copy of the laws adopted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The Russian law is not a pro-Russian law, but a Russian law. It is a copy of the laws passed by President Putin, which were intended to finally bind non-governmental organizations, hinder their activities, as well as the media. Here we have a copy of it. We are preparing for the parliamentary elections on October 26, which will be decisive for our European future. A preliminary attempt to reduce the scope of action of non-governmental organizations, as well as of international observers, also means limiting the action of our Western partners. This law is against everyone who fought for Georgia's independence, strengthening of institutions, democratization, and is directed against our European and American partners," said Salome Zurabishvili.

In addition, as she mentioned, there is a hybrid war against Georgia as opposed to the military war that is going on in Ukraine.

"We received the candidate status on December 15 of last year, which was celebrated by the entire population of Georgia as a great victory. We have the prospect of opening negotiations for joining the European Union at the end of the year. The people demand that no one, especially the government that serves other interests, can prevent the opening of these negotiations, because they pass laws that directly contradict the demands of the European Union. I have already used 5 vetoes and will soon use the sixth veto, because I said that I will do it every time the content or the text of the law contradicts the recommendations that the European partners gave us to start the accession negotiations," said Salome Zurabishvili.
