Salome Zurabishvili: The main issue that will be raised in these elections is what do we want - Europe or Russia? - I am sure what will be the answer of the Georgian population to this question

The main issue that will be raised in these elections is what do we want - Europe or Russia? I am sure what will be the answer of the Georgian population to this question - I will veto the bill [on transparency of foreign influence]! - The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, stated this in an interview with Sky News.

According to her, today it is clear that the majority of the population does not want the majority of the legislative body if they are heading towards Russia.

"I will veto it as soon as the third reading of the bill is over." Most likely, they will overcome the veto. But, this [veto] is very important because I am the voice of the people who oppose this [bill]. The veto is very symbolic and shows that Georgia cannot become a destination point by copying the laws that Putin and Russia pass. Charles Michel, as well as other European partners and ambassadors [in Tbilisi] made a statement about it, the US State Department also supports the statements made by the European Union. So all our partners and friends say - "don't accept this law". The only ones who evaluate this law positively and compliment the Georgian government are the representatives of Russia (Duma, Dimitri Peskov - Speaker). Therefore, it is very clear what this [law] is, where it comes from, and what Georgian people do not want. As for your statement that the political leaders of the country are not leading to the EU, but to Vladimir Putin, and there is not much we can do - we can! We can, because 80% of Georgian society supports the path of European integration. Last year, when we were granted candidate status, we saw unanimity and enthusiasm in the community. We are approaching the elections and there will be rallies during this period. We know that at present (that is, now, at this particular moment, until the elections are held) we cannot change the majority that is in the parliament today, although this does not mean that the people cannot express their will, which is important at this stage. Today it is clear that the majority of the population does not want a majority of the legislature if they are heading towards Russia. The main issue that will be raised in these elections is what do we want - Europe or Russia? I am sure what will be the answer of the Georgian population to this question. [Actions] are a spontaneous reaction of the Georgian people, especially the younger part of the population, which until now was not actively involved in politics. And now, we see the streets filled with young people. This happens precisely because they feel that someone is taking away their European future, that their European future is being taken away from them under the pressure of Moscow, which is openly playing a geopolitical game in the region, in the Caucasus", said Salome Zurabishvili in an interview.
