Grigol Vashadze: Discrimination on religious ground is unacceptable

Discrimination on religious ground is unacceptable, - Grigol Vashadze, leader of Power is in Unity movement, said when commenting on the initiative of Irakli Sesiashvili, Chairman of the Committee on Defense and Security.

According to him, the draft law was prepared by "unreasonable people".

"The bill was prepared by unreasonable and stupid people. Every citizen must fulfil his obligation before the state and armed forces. I want to tell you that there is no European country, where people can avoid compulsory military service because of their religious opinions. A simple response to this is alternative labor service. Discrimination on religious ground is absolutely unacceptable”, Grigol Vashadze said.

Irakli Sesiashvili, Chairman of the Defense and Security Committee, will submit a draft law on compulsory military service to the Parliamentary Bureau tomorrow. According to the draft law, clergymen or students of a theological institution will no longer be able to enjoy the postponement of compulsory military service.

According to Irakli Sesiashvili, the initiative will not apply to Orthodox clergy, since they are subject to the Concordat. Sesiashvili explained that the persons who, in compliance with freedom of conscience, religion and faith, refuse to be engaged in compulsory military service, have the right and the obligation to be engaged in alternative labor service.
