MP Anri Okhanashvili: It is unthinkable and inadmissible to bring politics into the judiciary

It is unthinkable and inadmissible to bring politics into the judiciary, - Anri Okhanashvili, Chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee, said in response to the opposition's statements about Irakli Okruashvili's imprisonment.

"On the one hand, these people are saying that any interference with the judiciary is inadmissible, and I fully agree with this position that a politician and a political group should not interfere with the judiciary. However, these people contradict themselves by saying that a political group, politicians, should intervene in the affairs of the judiciary and make political decisions. This is inadmissible and contradicts the principle of the rule of law. It is unthinkable and inadmissible to bring politics into the judiciary,” said Anri Okhanashvili.

According to him, the Georgian Dream will implement the agreement on the election model.

"The agreement reached on the election model on the basis of a political consensus, where our international partners played a very important role, will be implemented by the Georgian Dream. It is not in any danger. Therefore, the Georgian Dream will fully comply with this agreement. You know that changes have been initiated as well and we will fully carry out these changes,” Okhanashvili said.

The comment comes hours after the US Embassy in Georgia responded to the imprisonment of Irakli Okruashvili, the leader of the Victorious Georgia. “The timing and circumstances of Irakli Okruashvili’s arrest raised concerns about political interference and the selective use of justice. The case casts a shadow over the impartial application of justice – a concern the March 8 Joint Statement was intended to dispel. We urge all signatories to uphold the letter and spirit of the March 8 agreement”, reads the statement of the Embassy.
