According to Davit Zalkaliani, if Mikheil Saakashvili interferes in the self-government elections, it will become a topic of discussion with Ukrainian partners again

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Davit Zalkaliani, if former President Mikheil Saakashvili interferes in the self-government elections, it will again become a topic of discussion with Ukrainian partners. Zalkaliani told journalists about it in response to a question.

As the Minister noted, the ambassador to Ukraine who had been summoned due to Saakashvili, has already returned to the work process and he was attending the meetings with the delegation of the Prime Minister of Ukraine today. According to Zalkaliani, it is important that Ukraine, as a strategic partner and friendly country, respects the Georgian legislation.

"The ambassador returned to Kiev and began to exercise his powers. Now he is with the delegation and he attended the meetings. Our Ukrainian partners are well aware of our position on this issue. It is very important for us, when we are strategic partners, to respect each other's statehood and laws. When there is interference in the activities of another country, including violation of election law, it was certainly unacceptable. We told this to our strategic partner and friend. This is a step that is common in diplomatic practice. Since the ambassador was summoned, we have not lost contact for a single day. I was in constant contact with my Ukrainian colleague, we had phone conversations, correspondence, we met each other in different formats and we discussed how to get out of this situation. The ambassador is back and I am sure our relationship will develop with growing dynamism.

The Prime Minister of Ukraine also made a statement to the media that their position is that Mikheil Saakashvili does not influence the formation of Ukraine's policy towards Georgia, he does not have the position in the executive branch as they tried to present, he only has the function of an advisor. The main thing for us is not to violate our legislation.

If he participates in the self-government elections, we will discuss it with our Ukrainian partners. I call on everyone to respect Georgian legislation and our statehood", - Zalkaliani said.

In an exclusive interview with InterpressNews, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Saakashvili was advising on reforms, but that he had no influence on Ukrainian policy.

"He holds one of the positions in the Ukrainian advisory body, he shares with us his experience and advises on reforms, but he has nothing to do with the government, he does not influence Ukrainian policy, especially Ukrainian foreign policy", - Shmyhal said.
