Irakli Kobakhidze: We have had consultations with EU representatives, they explain that the offer of membership is relevant to Ukraine which is at war, but not relevant to Moldova and Georgia

We had preliminary consultations with EU representatives. They explain that the offer of EU membership is relevant to Ukraine which is at war, but not to Moldova and Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, chairman of the Georgian Dream, told reporters.

According to Kobakhidze, "emotional fuss" has been created due to incorrect information. He said that because of the war, Ukraine was offered the consideration of the prospect of granting candidate status in an expedited manner.

"Emotional agitation has been created due to the spread of incorrect information. We are dealing with the fact that in view of the war, Ukraine was offered the consideration of the prospect of granting candidate status in an expedited manner. This is not about Ukraine's membership. This is what EU officials and leaders are talking about. Anyway, Ukraine's accession to the EU will take many years, because there is a specific legal document according to which, until all the obligations are fulfilled, no country can become a member of the EU. This applies to Georgia, Moldova, all countries equally. As for Georgia, we will introduce such a document in the European Union in 2024. By 2024, we will have a serious part of the commitments fulfilled, after which there will be a rational basis for us to apply. We have had preliminary consultations with EU officials. They explain that the offer of EU membership is relevant to Ukraine which is at war, but not to Moldova and Georgia," Kobakhidze said.
