Part of non-governmental organizations welcome the ruling party's readiness to apply for EU membership and call on the Georgian Dream to start the process today, as well as to set up a special governmental structure to work on the issue, with Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili being the face of this process.
Keti Khutsishvili, Director of the Open Society Georgia Foundation, introduced the position of non-governmental organizations to journalists at a briefing today.
"Today we were going to call on the government to start working on the application for EU membership. It is welcome that this decision was made by them yesterday and we hope that this application will be sent today. This will be an important step for Georgia on the great path called European integration. We, the representatives of the civil society, welcome this step, but we would also like to point out that this is just the beginning of the road, it will be a difficult path, and the whole country, the government and the opposition must follow this path together.
The first thing the government needs to do is to return to its commitment under the Charles Michel Agreement. Also, the government's relationship with Ukraine needs to be urgently improved. In addition, if we make an application and embark on this path, we must do it together with the so-called Trio - Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova. All three of us are victims of Russian aggression, we have occupied lands. In addition, we believe that this process should start today. It is necessary to create a special structure in the government that will work on this, and we believe that the most acceptable face of this process would be the President of Georgia. Her administration may not be able to fully manage this activity, but it is the emergency structure set up in the executive branch that should assist the President in carrying out this function. We all understand that our President is the most acceptable figure from the Georgian government to Europe. Finally, I want to once again express my solidarity with the Ukrainian people," Keti Khutsishvili said.
