Sergo Chikhladze: A strategic partnership with China is actually a demarche against the West - the parliament has not given its consent to the government and Gharibashvili violates the legislation

A strategic partnership with China is actually a demarche against the West - the parliament has not given its consent to the government and Gharibashvili violates the legislation, Sergo Chikhladze, a member of Strategy Builder, said.

According to him, a strategic partnership with China in the direction of human rights and democracy, as well as the Russian aggression in Ukraine, is unthinkable.

"The framework of a strategic partnership shall be determined by the parliament and it shall be stipulated by the law. So far we have a strategic partnership with the USA. The Parliament has not given consent to the government for the strategic partnership with China. Mr. Gharibashvili violates the legislation. Moreover, strategic partnership implies strategic partnership in all directions. How do you imagine a strategic partnership in the direction of human rights, in the direction of democracy, in relation to the position of the war in Ukraine?! Of course, we should have a good and partnership attitude with China, but strategic partnership is another level and it needs an agreement with the parliament. This is a certain demarche against the West, because if you are a strategic partner of the US, the European Union, it is a bit difficult to have the same level of strategic partnership with China. These countries do not have a strategic partnership with China, and moreover, there is a certain political balance to protect. This is a message to the West, especially in the background when the existing strategic partnership is damaged. The government of Georgia should now take care of maintaining, consolidating and strengthening the existing strategic partnership with the existing strategic partners and should not run in search of a strategic partnership with China," Chikhladze said.
