The Federal Council of Germany recognized Georgia and Moldova as safe countries.
According to the decision of the German Federal Council (Bundesrat), Georgia and Moldova will be considered safe countries of origin in terms of asylum laws.
The decision means that asylum applications from citizens of Georgia and Moldova will be processed more quickly and, in most cases, may be rejected.
According to the German government, the recognition level of asylum seekers from Georgia and Moldova in the first half of 2023 was about 0.1%. Currently, 15% of the rejected applications for asylum in Germany are citizens of Georgia and Moldova.
According to the Federal Council, the said decision creates the basis for "to now use the agreements on migration to increase the already good cooperation with both countries to a new level and to significantly reduce illegal migration."
