Opponents of the draft law "On transparency of foreign influence", who gathered at the Vake Park, have started a march.
Participating professors, scientists and other representatives of academic circles will march to TSU.
Their demand is that the government withdraws the said bill.
"We, the professors, teachers, scientists, researchers, academic and administrative staff of the universities in Georgia join the fair and democratic civil protest against the "Law on transparency of foreign influence". In addition to direct violence, in order to suppress and silence the fair protest of the university community - students and professors, the authorities are trying to undermine the autonomy, expression and academic freedom of Georgian universities and, accordingly, to ignore the guarantees defined by Article 27 of the Constitution.
It should be noted that the enactment of the above-mentioned law and the existing authoritarian regime are causing serious reputational damage to the educational and scientific space of Georgia, canceling academic freedom and hindering international cooperation. This will lead to Georgia’s scientific isolation and erosion in the long term.
Considering the mentioned threats, we believe that the unification of the academic community is critically important for the protection of the main principles of university and scientific activities and, accordingly, for the free and democratic future of the country. That's why we join the public protest", says the united appeal, which was distributed by representatives of the academic circle.
At 19:00, they will join the rally planned near the Parliament.
