Michael Roth: The Georgian government rejects all chances of joining the European Union, for the moment the door to the European Union is closed

The Georgian government is denying all chances of joining the European Union, the door of the European Union is closed for the moment, - the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the German Parliament (Bundestag), Michael Roth, said in a conversation with the German publication Bild.

"The anti-LGBT law, the government's hatred of sexual minorities, is a break from Georgia's proud history of diversity and openness. This is not the Georgia I learned to love...

[Georgia's] government rejects all chances of joining the European Union. He has gone too far in his balancing policy between Russia and the EU. Accession negotiations are not possible on this basis. Progress will only come when controversial laws are withdrawn, violence against demonstrators is stopped, and dialogue with the opposition continues. For the moment, the door of the European Union is closed," said Roth.

According to the chairman of the Bundestag's foreign relations committee, Georgia's prospects are "bleak" and he fears that "the West will turn away from Georgia, while the influence of Russia and China continues to grow. Many young Georgians will leave the country."

"[Georgian government] refuses to accept Western politicians. European values such as the protection of minorities and freedom of the media are being deliberately attacked. If the government wins the next election, it plans to ban the opposition. At this rate, they are not partners of the European Union," said Roth.

He noted that during his visit to Tbilisi, he felt that young Georgians think differently from the government and "here you can feel that the heart of Europe is now beating in Georgia".
