MEP Rihards Kols: what we are seeing in Georgia is nothing less than a deliberate attempt to overthrow democracy - democracy will win and must win

What we are seeing in Georgia is nothing less than a deliberate attempt to destroy democracy, - European Parliamentarian Richard Kols said at the plenary session of the European Parliament on Georgia.

According to him, the so-called the Alien Transit Transparency Act, along with recent legislative changes, is not just wrong, it's dangerous.

"These laws sent a restraining signal not only to the Georgian people, but also to the international community. The laws, modeled after Russia's handbook, are poised to stifle opposition and limit freedom of expression.

I express solidarity with the Georgian people, who largely support the integration into the European Union, although the actions of the current government undermine this future", added the MEP.

Kols spoke about the October 26 parliamentary elections in Georgia and said it is vital that the upcoming elections meet the highest standards of transparency, fairness and freedom.

"Anything less than that creates a risk that Georgia will move further away from the path to the European Union.

But let me be clear, while the government can try to manipulate narratives, the aspirations of the Georgian people for democracy and a pro-European future cannot and will not be silenced. Their democracy will win and it must win," said Kols.
