The future of Georgia, including the path to the European Union, is in the hands of its citizens and leaders from the beginning to the end, - the Vice-President of the European Commission, Vera Yurova, said at the plenary session about Georgia in the European Parliament.

According to Yurova, it is important for political leaders to reduce polarization, and elections should be held in a peaceful and inclusive environment.

"The future of Georgia, including the path to the European Union, is in the hands of its citizens and leaders from beginning to end. Before the parliamentary elections, it is important that political leaders reduce polarization and engage positively with citizens. Elections should be held in a peaceful and inclusive environment," she added.

According to Yurova, the European Union will continue to monitor all developments in the country. Eurova stated that the door of the European Union remains open for Georgia, however, she emphasized the need to comply with the principles of the European Union.

"Real progress on the European road depends on democratic and sustainable reforms that are in line with the key principles of European integration. Protecting political diversity, human rights, active civil society and independent media are also central to the [EU] enlargement process.

The door of the European Union remains open and we are ready to support the country's reforms in all its efforts, but we will clearly condemn any action that could undermine democracy, human rights and the rule of law. All this is for the benefit of the Georgian people", said Yurova
