Guram Macharashvili criticizes October 20 rally, claims low turnout shows public rejection

Georgian Dream MP Guram Macharashvili criticized the October 20 rally in support of Georgia’s European integration, attributing the low turnout to the involvement of "Tbilisi Pride" and its push for same-sex marriage, which he claims the majority of society rejects.

Macharashvili questioned why it was surprising that most of Georgian society did not attend the rally, given its association with "Tbilisi Pride" and their alleged demand for the legalization of same-sex marriage. He argued that despite a month-long preparation effort by opposition forces, NGOs, foreign actors, and the European Union, the rally did not meet expectations.

"When 'Tbilisi Pride' organizes an action demanding the legalization of marriage for men, why is it surprising that the majority of society does not go there?"

According to Macharashvili, even the involvement of international figures like MEPs and congressmen in organizing the rally did not attract significant public support, as it did not align with the values of the majority. He also mentioned that a small percentage of citizens might be misled by outside forces, but the rally's turnout reflected a broader rejection of the event's agenda.

"The majority of the Georgian public will not come to the rally of this type and also those organizations that want to start a war."

Macharashvili believes that the upcoming October 26 election will reaffirm Georgian society’s preference for peace, traditions, and sovereignty, as demonstrated by the rally's low attendance.

"On October 26, the majority of the society will confirm that it chooses peace, traditions, and sovereignty."
