The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia expresses serious concern about the conclusions of independent international and local observers on the parliamentary elections of Georgia, - it is stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
The agency emphasizes that the elections were held in the conditions of pronounced political polarization, in the background of tension between the political power and the opposition.
"At the same time, especially given the current situation, the great interest of the Georgian people in these elections is welcome - both the high turnout and the interest of the Georgian society in their progress and results," the statement said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia emphasizes that the observers published an opinion on serious violations during the pre-election period and on the election day, which include intimidation of the opposition, interference in the election process, use of administrative resources, pressure on voters and intimidation of voters.
"Latvia calls on the Georgian authorities to immediately take measures to investigate the revealed violations and ensure local and international public confidence in the election process and protection of citizens' fundamental rights." The Georgian government and law enforcement agencies must respect the right of Georgian citizens to express their opinion in elections held in accordance with all democratic principles. The results of the elections should be evaluated by the Georgian people," the statement said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia emphasizes that it will continue to closely monitor the developments in the country.
