Josep Borrell: We were telling the Georgian government that they were turning away from the European path - they need strong changes, even if they are still considered candidates for EU membership

I don't see similarities between Ukraine and Georgia, they need strong changes, even if they are still considered as candidates for EU membership, - the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said in an interview with Ukrainian media.

When asked whether there are similarities between Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, Josep Borrell answered that he does not see similarities between Ukraine and Georgia.

"First of all, I don't see any similarity between Ukraine and Georgia. I can't see at all. We told the Georgian rulers, the government of Georgia, that they were deviating from the European path, and if they want to become members of the European Union, then they should change the law that was adopted, correct the problems revealed during the elections, and return to the path. They need strong changes, even if they are still considered candidates for EU membership. But in the case of Ukraine, this is not the case at all," said Josep Borrell.

According to him, the President, government and society of Ukraine are fully interested in joining the European Union.

"The President and the government of Ukraine are fully interested in joining the European Union, as well as Ukrainian society. There is no doubt that your country wants to join the European Union, and Ukraine's accession to the European Union is the strongest security commitment or the strongest security guarantee that we can offer to Ukraine. Regarding Georgia, of course, the case is different," Josep Borrell said.
