Ombudsman: After people were arrested at the rally, our representatives immediately started looking for them, went to the isolation cells, and we have a corresponding protocol record for all cases, response

Representatives of the Public Defender are not directly present at the event. In order to adequately assess the current situation at the rally, we need a complete picture. Being at the rally cannot provide this complete picture, - this is how Public Defender Levan Ioselian answered the question of why the Public Defender was not present during the crackdown on Melikishvili Avenue.

According to him, the number of detainees is not such that it is necessary to visit him personally.

"Representatives of the Public Defender are not directly present at the event. In order to adequately assess the situation at the rally, a complete picture is needed. Being at the rally cannot provide this complete picture. You only see one specific space there. Our employees watch it through social media, on TV.

You have seen many times that if our resources are not sufficient to see everyone on time, I go and meet the busy ones. "There are not enough detainees now that it is necessary for me to come," Ioseliani said.

According to him, those who apply to the public defender regarding the facts of violence, their statements are sent to the special investigative service.

"As for the action and the persons arrested at the action. We have issued a statement about it. After people started to be arrested at the rally and it became known about it, our representatives immediately started looking for these people, went to the detention centers, and we have a corresponding protocol record and response to all cases of arrest. Not only today, but also 2 days ago, we visited those arrested. Those who report violence and provide us with information, their statements will be forwarded to the Special Investigation Service, relevant agencies.

As for the media issue. I have repeatedly stated that everyone should be given the opportunity to perform activities in a free environment. Any type of violence or interference with the media is not allowed. Obstructing the work of media representatives is a criminal offense. We have seen alleged facts of interference with media representatives, about which we have reacted accordingly. Whatever documentation we collected will be sent to the Special Investigation Service. Any violence is unacceptable, the expressed violence of the state should be followed by a corresponding strict and timely response, so that it does not become systemic. As for the violence carried out by individuals, the state should have an adequate attitude. We should not allow the media to be a natural person, if the representative of the state inflicts such violence as to prevent him from carrying out his professional activities", Ioseliani said.
