The OSCE/ODIHR has published its findings and we await their final report. In the preliminary report, they highlight substantial violations in the context of the elections. They talk about unequal conditions during the pre-election campaign and numerous violations on election day. We have joined other European countries and European institutions to demand an impartial and transparent investigation of all complaints and the elimination of observed violations, - the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Georgia, Meline Arakelian, said in an exclusive interview with "InterpressNews".
The diplomat noted in the interview that such violations are disturbing for a country like Georgia.
"The October parliamentary elections were very important for Georgia. To this end, my country, the Netherlands, sent more observers than we usually do in OSCE/ODIHR election observation missions. The OSCE/ODIHR has published its findings and we await their final report. In the preliminary report, they highlight substantial violations in the context of the elections. They talk about unequal conditions during the pre-election campaign and numerous violations on election day. The Netherlands has expressed serious concern about these violations, as it is worrying for a country like Georgia to see such violations. We have joined other European countries and European institutions to demand an impartial and transparent investigation into all complaints and the elimination of violations," she said.
Regarding the investigation, according to the ambassador, it is the responsibility of the Georgian authorities to conduct this investigation in a reliable way.
"We base our opinion mainly on the OSCE/ODIHR report. It was a very large international observation mission. Based on their findings, we have expressed our concerns. I don't want to repeat all the issues raised in their report, but we have called for an impartial and credible investigation, as this is also necessary to restore public confidence in the electoral process. It is also important to learn from what went wrong. OSCE/ODIHR also regularly issues recommendations to improve the electoral process. It is therefore important that this very credible investigation is conducted thoroughly and that lessons are drawn from it for future elections.
As I said earlier, we have demanded an impartial investigation. First of all, it is the responsibility of the Georgian authorities to conduct this investigation in a reliable way," the ambassador said.
