Gia Khukhashvili: I would not consider the position of Gakharia's party to be scandalous - the appropriate moment to cancel the mandates will be when the West states its position, writing a statement now is pointless

According to political scientist Gia Khukhashvili, the "most adequate moment" for the opposition MPs to withdraw their mandates will be when "the West will say a simple thing that the October 26 elections cannot be considered and that the violations were of such a nature that they changed the results essentially." He stated this while talking to "InterpressNews", thus responding to the statement of Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the "Gakharia for Georgia" party, where he says that the party is not going to appeal to the parliament for the termination of mandates at this stage.

According to Khukhashvili, this position of the party is "a matter of political tactics, not strategy".

According to him, if the West "indirectly recognizes" the parliamentary elections and starts cooperating with the government, the opposition will be left without a partner and it "will not be able to get any practical results".

"This is an absolutely logical statement, considering that it is pointless to talk about writing a statement now. Based on our legislation, this has no practical effect. To announce [removal of mandates], this is only a political statement because the government is determined to recognize the authority of 150 deputies in all cases, regardless of whether such a statement existed or not. Therefore, it is a matter of political tactics. Today, no real legal consequences will follow who behaves how.

As for the several-month process, I would also share this opinion. This is not a sustainable process. In order for this process, i.e. the demand for delegitimization of the government to be successfully completed, it is necessary to draw appropriate conclusions from the West. It takes time. A few months may be a lot, but two months are really needed to finally clear up the situation and to know what position they are in - cooperating with this government, not cooperating, etc. Therefore, I would not consider this statement scandalous. It is a matter of political tactics, not strategy. Some have such a tactic, some have that. In fact, they say that they are not going to give legitimacy to this parliament, that is, they are not going to enter the parliament. Time will tell the rest.

Let's take a model when the West will look critically at the government, but at least indirectly recognize the conducted elections and start cooperation. On the one hand, the feeling of protest remains after that, but on the other hand, if you, the oppositionist, are left without the main partner, what practical result will you get? - Nothing.

This is the moment when the West will make a decision and say the simple thing that this election cannot be considered an election; that the violations were of such a nature as to materially alter the results. If the Western partners give this final assessment to the elections and include the mechanisms that they have announced, I think this is the most appropriate moment to close the mandates. In addition, complete internal and external delegitimization of the existing government should take place. I think that we should talk about this moment", said Khukhashvili.

In addition, according to him, it is "completely real" that the West will not recognize the October 26 parliamentary elections, and if someone gives legitimacy to the parliament of the eleventh convocation, including Giorgi Gakharia, it "will be equivalent to political suicide".

"It's quite real, why not?" We see that the West has not yet made a final decision. Here, too, an element of ambiguity comes from the fact that the European Union does not begin to act without the United States. They act synchronously. And in the United States there is a certain pause due to the fact that there is a transitional government. For strategic decisions regarding this or that country, they were still not wrong. This transition period will end. When we talk about one or two months, we are talking about exactly these moments. At the same time, I think that the protest should not slow down. If someone gives legitimacy to the government today, including Gakhari, it will be equivalent to political suicide. But on the other hand, in my opinion, it is a bit premature to burn bridges. So we are in the process now. Let's not rush to cross the finish line, it is not yet visible at the finish line. We have to wait. When he appears, everyone will make their decision", Gia Khukhashvili said.

For information, the party "Gakharia - for Georgia" is not going to apply to the parliament for the termination of mandates at this stage and does not rule out that "the process will take several months". Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the political council of the "Gakharia for Georgia" party, said about this on the "PalitraNews" program in "Free Studio".

As Giorgi Sharashidze pointed out, they will apply to the Parliament for termination of parliamentary mandates when "it will be the best time".

"We're dealing with a process, whether it's a one-day process, even a week or two weeks, maybe we're going to see a months-long process that we just can't escape. When will we do it? We will do it when it is the best time", said Giorgi Sharashidze.
