20-year-old Mate Devidze, accused of attacking the policemen, was imprisoned as a preventive measure.
The mentioned decision was made by the judge of the Tbilisi City Court, Davit Kurtanidze.
The prosecutor's office requested the use of the strictest measure of restraint against the detainee.
According to the state prosecutor, the act charged by Mate Devidze belongs to a serious category of crime, and in order to avoid the expected punishment, an attempt to hide may be made on his part, there is also a danger of destruction of evidence, new crime and influence on witnesses.
As the prosecutor Ani Khubejashvili explained in his motion during the trial, the action of the accused is violent, as a result of his flexible stick, the law enforcement officers received injuries in the hand, forehead, ring and back area.
The defense did not agree to the prosecutor's motion. According to the lawyers, Mate Devidze has not been convicted and imprisonment should not be used as a preventive measure against him. The defense filed a petition for Devidze's release in exchange for 2,000 GEL bail.
According to the lawyers, Mate Devidze's coming to the rally had no political significance.
"He had adequate self-defense reflexes at the moment when the police said to arrest him. "He did not resist the police and he did not show any aggression," said the lawyer.
For information, Mate Devidze is among the 16 persons who were detained by the law enforcement officers during the ongoing rally on Melikishvili avenue. He, along with others, was accused of disobeying a policeman and committing petty hooliganism, however, after the expiration of the 48-hour administrative detention, when he was supposed to be released from the isolation cell, the article was changed and now the investigation is underway for a possible criminal offense.
Mate Devidze was charged under the first part of Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which refers to an attack on a police officer.
