GYLA: The delay in court proceedings against protest participants raises suspicions that the cases are being deliberately delayed so that the president cannot grant pardons during his term of office

The court is delaying the consideration of criminal cases of participants in the “Russian Law” protests. This is stated in the statement of the “Young Lawyers’ Association”.

According to the statement, the Tbilisi City Court is still considering the cases of 6 activists arrested during the “Russian Law” protests in April-May. Despite the fact that the defendants have been in custody for a long time, the consideration of the cases is constantly being delayed.

“The delay in the trial of the protest participants raises suspicions that the cases are not being completed on purpose so that the president will not have time to pardon them during his term of office.

Such an approach is a violation of fair justice and the rights of prisoners.

We call on the court, taking into account that imprisonment has been used as a preventive measure against the accused, not to delay the consideration of criminal cases.

GYLA also demands an objective investigation into the facts of violence by law enforcement officers during the dispersal of rallies and to hold the relevant individuals accountable," the statement reads.
