Protester arrested on charges of assaulting police officer

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has detained a participant in the ongoing rally on Rustaveli Avenue on charges of assaulting a police officer. The Ministry of Internal Affairs itself has released the information.

“As a result of operational measures and investigative actions, officers of the Tbilisi Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as a result of the conducted operational measures and investigative actions, arrested A.G., born in 1980, who had a previous conviction for theft, on charges of assaulting a police officer.

In 2021, a restraining order was issued against A.G. for the fact of violence against his parent.

“The investigation established that the defendant, who was participating in the rally on Rustaveli Avenue in the vicinity of the Parliament, attacked and physically assaulted a patrol inspector who was on site to maintain public order.

Law enforcement officers have arrested A.G. as a suspect in the attack.

The crime is punishable by imprisonment for a term of 4 to 7 years.

The investigation is underway under Article 353 of the Criminal Code,” the Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement.
