The CEC explains the procedures related to the elections of the President of Georgia

The election of the president of Georgia will be held for the first time in the history of the country in a new way - the president will be elected for a 5-year term by the electoral college, which consists of 300 members. The deadlines, rules or procedures related to elections are different.

According to the Central Election Commission, the Parliament made a decision regarding the appointment of elections on December 14, taking into account the Constitution.

According to the statement of the CEC, due to the fact that the elections were scheduled by the Parliament on December 14, it was necessary to modify some events and deadlines, which the election administration has the authority to do according to the law, therefore, at the session held on November 26, the CEC adopted a resolution on the determination of some election events and deadlines.

"Since wrong interpretations and manipulative statements are spread by some interested parties, in order to accurately inform the public, the election administration explains in detail the issues related to the elections of the President of Georgia.

First of all, it should be noted that the election of the President of Georgia is decided by the Parliament. According to the Constitution of Georgia, if the date of the election of the President of Georgia coincides with the parliamentary elections or the month before it, the elections of the President of Georgia shall be held within 45 days of the first session of the newly elected Parliament. Accordingly, the Parliament made a decision regarding the appointment of elections on December 14, taking into account the Constitution.

As for the issues related to the organization of the elections, the CEC administers the elections. Due to the fact that the elections were scheduled by the Parliament on December 14, it became necessary to modify some events and deadlines, which the election administration has the authority to do according to the legislation (Election Code, Article 14). Accordingly, at the session held on November 26, the CEC adopted a resolution on the determination of some election events and deadlines.

According to the resolution, the Parliament of Georgia, the highest representative bodies of the Autonomous Republics of Abkhazia and Adjara are obliged to submit to the Central Election Commission the names, surnames and personal numbers of all members of the Parliament of Georgia, the highest representative bodies of the Autonomous Republics of Abkhazia and Adjara within 2 days from the date of the election; Also, the authorized parties are obliged, in accordance with the quotas determined by the CEC, within 2 days from the date of the election, to submit the relevant data of the person nominated as a member of the electoral college and the name of the representative body of the municipality - the city council, of which the person is a member, as well as the written consent of the nominated person.

The composition of the electoral college is approved by the CEC decree no later than the 11th day (December 3) before the election day.No less than 30 members of the electoral college can nominate a candidate for the presidency of Georgia no later than the 9th day (December 5) before the election day. According to the CEC decree, the candidate for the presidency of Georgia is registered no later than the 6th day (December 8) before the election day.

As for the voting day, the election of the President of Georgia (first round) is held in the Palace of the Parliament of Georgia, from 09:00 on the election day and ends at 14:00 on the same day, or any time before, if all members of the electoral college have voted.In the first round of elections, the candidate who receives at least two-thirds of the votes of the full composition of the electoral college will be considered elected. If the president of Georgia is not elected in the first round, the second round will be held on the same day and the candidate who receives more votes will be considered elected.

At the session, the CEC also determined the schedule of election events and determined the quotas of members in the electoral college for authorized citizens' political associations. According to the decree of the CEC, the quotas in the electoral college were determined as follows:No. 1 - "Yes to Europe - a constructive strategy" - 1 member of the electoral college;No. 2 - "European Georgia - movement for freedom" - election2 members of the collegium;No. 5 - "Unity - National Movement" - 36 members of the electoral college;No. 8 - "Alliance of Georgian Patriots" - 1 member of the electoral college;No. 9 - "Strong Georgia - an effort, for the people, for freedom!" - 4 members of electoral college;No. 10 - Labor Party of Georgia - 1 member of the electoral college;No. 25 - "Gakharia for Georgia" - 9 members of the electoral college;No. 41 - "Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia" - 54 of the electoral collegea member; 45 - "Girchi-Meti Tavisufleba" - 1 member of the electoral college.
