Representative of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly: reports of violence during demonstrations are alarming - I also call on all demonstrators to use their right to peaceful protest, violent actions are not allowed

I am concerned about the developments in Georgia after the October parliamentary elections, - the special representative of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in the South Caucasus, Luis Graca (Portugal), issued a statement regarding the current events in Georgia.

"Reports of violence during recent demonstrations are alarming. I share ODIHR's concerns. Also, I call on all demonstrators to use their right to peaceful protest respecting the rule of law, because violent actions are not allowed. My appeal is that the protests should be peaceful. At the same time, stressing that the police are obliged to show restraint in front of the demonstrators, it is important that the authorities listen to the demonstrators and respect their fundamental freedoms," said the special representative of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.

Luis Graca calls on all parties for a constructive dialogue.

"As mentioned in the preliminary conclusions of the international observation mission, the elections were held in a deeply polarized environment, which we can still see today. I call on everyone to take note of the upcoming OSCE/ODIHR final report and I also call on all parties to engage in a constructive and open dialogue to restore trust and strengthen democratic institutions," Graha said.

According to him, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is ready to help in order to promote dialogue.

"The Georgian people deserve a peaceful and democratic future, and our Assembly remains committed to supporting efforts to achieve this goal," said the Special Representative of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in the South Caucasus.
