Anthony Blinken: The US shares the concerns of many OSCE members regarding Georgian Dream's decision to stop Georgia's EU accession process

The US shares the concern of many OSCE members regarding the decision of "Georgian Dream" to stop the process of joining Georgia to the European Union, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in his speech at the 31st meeting of the OSCE Ministerial Council in Malta.

"This will have an ominous tinge of 2014. We support the right to peaceful protest and condemn the brutal aggression and repression against people who call for their country to stay on the path of close connection with Europe, in particular the reports of attacks on journalists and their arrests," said Anthony Blinken.

According to him, the OSCE has observed dozens of elections this year, including in the USA, and the organization's evaluations are considered the gold standard.

"The OSCE confirmed that, despite Russian interference, the second round of elections in Moldova was well administered. Now the Romanian authorities are exposing Russia's extensive and well-financed efforts. At the same time, observers in Georgia shed light on disturbing reports of voter intimidation and attempts by the ruling party to use the environment to its advantage," the US Secretary of State noted.

Anthony Blinken also spoke about the importance of the OSCE.

"Georgian Dream's anti-democratic actions emphasize the importance of the work of the OSCE to strengthen the protection of civil society, freedom of the press, journalists, anti-corruption activists and human rights defenders," said Anthony Blinken.
