Resolution of the Lithuanian Seimas: Calling on the EU to impose personal sanctions on Georgian officials and political leaders responsible for violent repression against the civilian population

The Seimas of Lithuania calls on the European Union and its member states to impose personal sanctions on Georgian officials and political leaders who are directly or indirectly responsible for violent repression against the country's civilian population, to limit official contacts at the European Union level with the Georgian government and parliament, and to suspend financial support to the Georgian government and authorities and accordingly increase support for Georgian civil society and free media, - about this by the Seimas of Lithuania the adopted resolution.

According to the document, the Seimas firmly supports the legitimate European aspirations of the people of Georgia and their desire to live in a prosperous democratic country.

The resolution also mentions that the Parliament of Lithuania categorically condemns the Georgian government's violence against peaceful protesters in Tbilisi and other countries of the country, the intimidation and illegal detention of civil society and media representatives, and the systematic dissemination of Russian propaganda disinformation by the ruling authorities.

According to the resolution, taking into account the scale of violations observed during the parliamentary elections held in Georgia, the elections do not meet the international standards of democratic elections and therefore should not be considered free or fair elections. The resolution of the Seimas supports the call of the European Parliament to hold new parliamentary elections in Georgia.

The Seimas resolution also supports calls for an independent and transparent international investigation into allegations of election manipulation, voter intimidation and systemic violations that reportedly took place in Georgia during the pre-election period and on election day. The document welcomes the decision of the European External Action Service to send a mission to Georgia in order to properly and fully assess the violations.

At the same time, the Seimas emphasizes that it will continue to support the aspirations of the Georgian people for EU integration, although progress on this path is suspended until the main problems related to the fundamental criteria for EU enlargement are resolved.

The Seimas adopted the resolution with 109 votes in favor and one vote against.
