We strongly condemn the use of force against the Georgian people, we call on the Georgian authorities to immediately stop these violent actions, - said the joint statement of the presidents of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.
"Since the integration of Georgia into the European Union is a constitutional obligation, we, the presidents of the Baltic countries and Poland, express our deep disappointment about the decision made by the leadership of the ruling Georgian Dream to suspend the EU accession negotiations until 2028. This decision is a serious obstacle to the aspirations of the Georgian people. The parliamentary elections held in Georgia on October 26, 2024 were marked by significant controversy, which calls into question the legitimacy of the newly elected parliament.
"We take into account the call of the European Parliament to re-hold the parliamentary elections in Georgia and call for an international investigation into violations, including reports of voter intimidation and pressure, which undermined public confidence in the election process and its results," the presidents said.
The presidents of Poland and the Baltic states confirm their support for the aspirations of the Georgian people towards European integration.
"We strongly condemn the use of force against the Georgian people, as well as the arrest of those who exercise their rights. We call on the Georgian authorities to immediately stop these violent actions and to protect the fundamental freedoms of assembly and expression, in accordance with Georgia's international obligations. All acts of violence must be investigated immediately and the perpetrators must be held accountable," the statement said. For information, Estonian President Alar Karis, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda and Polish President Andrzej Duda met today in Klaipeda, Lithuania.
