In order to continue to meet all the standards of visa liberalization and to avoid the possible implementation of the suspension mechanism, Georgia should take further urgent measures to fulfill the recommendations of the European Commission, - this is stated in the seventh report of the European Commission on the "Visa Suspension Mechanism".
"Taking into account the recent developments in Georgia, discussions are underway on the possible implementation of the visa regime suspension mechanism for certain categories of persons. In order to continue to meet all visa liberalization standards and avoid the possible activation of the suspension mechanism, Georgia must take further urgent measures to implement the Commission's recommendations," the report states.
The European Commission singles out specific issues in the form of recommendations:
"To ensure and protect the fundamental rights of all citizens of Georgia, including the freedom of association, assembly and expression, the right to privacy, the right to participate in public affairs and the prohibition of discrimination."
Repeal and withdraw any legislation that may limit fundamental rights and freedoms that are contrary to the principle of non-discrimination and relevant European and international standards. In particular, repeal the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence and the legislative package on Family Values and Protection of Minors, as well as amend the National Human Rights Strategy and Action Plan to ensure full respect for the rights of LGBTIQ persons.
Align Georgia's visa policy with the EU's list of third countries that require visas, especially for countries that pose illegal migration or security risks to the EU.
Strengthen efforts to address the problem of unfounded asylum requests and irregular stays in member states, for example by conducting information campaigns for the relevant category of migrants on visa-free travel and tightening border checks.
Establish an Asset Recovery Office and an Asset Management Office and continue to work on asset tracing, freezing, management, confiscation and liquidation.
adopt a new anti-corruption strategy and action plan, allocate sufficient resources for its implementation and pay special attention to the investigation, prosecution and sentencing of high-level corruption cases.
Amend the Law on the Anti-Corruption Bureau to take into account the main recommendations of the Venice Commission, especially those related to the independence, political neutrality and functions of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
to bring personal data protection law in line with EU standards," the report said.
