Paweł Herczyński: What is happening in Georgia clearly calls for sanctions, and I know that work is already underway to prepare sanctions - reaching unanimity depends on all 27 capitals

What has been happening in the last 12 days is absolutely incompatible with the relationship that the European Union had with Georgia, - Ambassador of the European Union in Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, told journalists.

When asked what measures are on the table regarding the Georgian authorities, at the meeting of foreign ministers scheduled for December 16 in Brussels, the ambassador answered that "all measures are on the table".

"All measures are on the table. Georgia had a privileged relationship with the European Union for many years. We offered Georgia an association agreement, an agreement on free trade, an agreement on visa-free travel. Finally, Georgia was granted the status of candidate for membership. What is happening in the last 12 days is absolutely incompatible with all of this, and it is necessary to think about this privileged relationship that the European Union has had with Georgia for the past 10 years, this is what will happen," the ambassador noted.

When asked whether the issue of sanctions against the Government of Georgia is discussed, the ambassador answered:

"I have already made it very clear that when it comes to the policy of sanctions, it is very difficult for the European Union because it requires the unanimity of 27 member states, however, what is happening in Georgia in the last 12 days clearly calls for sanctions, and I know that work is already underway to prepare sanctions, unanimity achievement depends on all 27 capital cities. I think I hope it will be hard for any EU capital to ignore the level of violence, the level of brutality. Let's see if the sanctions will be presented on Monday, the preparatory work is already underway," the ambassador noted.
