The ghosts of the Russian Empire are still present in Georgia and appear in what is happening today, American Senator from the "Republican Party", James Risch, said in the Congress, where he spoke about the support of the Georgian people and democracy.
According to him, the tactics used by the Georgian government today are the tactics used in Russia.
"This is cruelty. It includes torture, it includes arrests. Everything we see from the old Soviet Union. This is not what the Georgian people want," the senator said.
According to him, it is written in the Constitution of Georgia that the Georgian people aspire to join the European Union and NATO, and in addition, according to the survey, about 80% of the population of Georgia wants to join the European Union and NATO.
"Unfortunately, the current government - "Georgian Dream" - is behaving more and more disturbingly, including arresting and torturing peaceful protesters. But there is hope. We passed a bill that gives the Biden administration the ability to impose sanctions on people who should be sanctioned. It's not a secret. We know who they are, they know who they are, the State Department knows who they are, the Biden administration knows who they are. So let's get started. I am deeply disappointed that we did not. It will not be a burden to this country, but it will be a burden to the individuals. I don't understand why this was not implemented. It is the fault of incompetence, laziness, or something else, but we did not do it. I want to urge the administration to step in and do what needs to be done: follow the law that we've put in place, take advantage of the sanctions that we've put in place. The Georgian people do not want what is happening there, they do not want to return to the Soviet Union or Russia. They want to turn to the West, they want to be a part of the European Union, NATO. Let's help them in whatever way we can to support their democratic aspirations," the senator said.
