On December 14, the electoral college will elect the president of Georgia. Only one candidacy of Mikheil Kavelashvili has been nominated for the position of president, who will be the sixth head of state elected by the electoral college and the first indirectly.
The voting process will start at 9:00 a.m. and continue until 2:00 p.m. in the Parliament Palace.
The presence of the majority of the full composition of the electoral college - at least 151 members - is sufficient to conduct indirect elections of the president.
The vote of 2/3 of the full composition of the collegium - at least 200 members - is enough to elect the president.
The indirectly elected president will hold office for five years.
The electoral college has 300 members. The collegium includes: - 150 members of the parliament, all members of the highest representative body of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara - a total of 21 deputies, all 20 members of the highest representative body of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia and 109 members from the city councils.
Out of 109 members of local self-government bodies, "Georgian Dream" had to present only 54 members, and eight opposition parties - 55 members in total. Taking into account that the opposition unions did not appoint members from the city councils to the electoral college, all 55 seats designated for them were filled by the official party. As a result, the "Georgian Dream" party has 211 members in the electoral college approved by the CEC - 89 members from the parliament, 13 members from the Supreme Council of Adjara, and 109 members from the city councils.
The electoral college includes 69 members of the opposition - 61 deputies with a parliamentary mandate, as well as eight opposition representatives of the Supreme Council of Adjara, although their presence in the electoral college is only a formality, since the opposition does not participate in the process of choosing a precedent.
As for the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, all 20 members of the Council are included in the electoral collegium. Elections of the highest representative body of Abkhazia have not been held since 1991, and since 1994, after the displacement, it has been functioning in Tbilisi.
The Parliament ensures the indirect election of the President through the CEC. The CEC will summarize the results of the presidential elections at its session immediately after the elections, which will also be held in the Parliament Palace.
