During a debate in the European Parliament on Georgia, German MEP Tobias Kremer stated, "Let’s show that Europe can act when needed and impose sanctions on those who take harsh measures against their own people."
"Just recently, I returned from Tbilisi, and what I saw there, to be honest, was shocking. A government that, after rigged elections, is taking harsh measures against its own population and trying to turn European democracy into an authoritarian regime in the Belarusian style, under the shadow of the Kremlin. This is straight from the Russian playbook—well-known tactics of disinformation, manipulation, violence, and torture. But, colleagues, what I saw in Georgia gave me hope. Tens of thousands of people are going out on the streets every day, fighting for freedom, democracy, and for Georgia, waving the EU flag. This flag is a symbol of freedom for them," Kremer remarked.
He added that it was time for Europe to act in support of the Georgian people.
"During my visit, people greeted us with EU flags, but they also asked us, 'Where is Europe at this moment of truth?' Colleagues, now Georgians are watching us, and not only Georgians, but also Ukrainians and Moldovans, who are now fighting for freedom. So, let’s show them that Europe can act when needed. Let’s impose sanctions on those who take harsh measures against their own people. Let’s welcome the President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, in this chamber, and let’s support the Georgian people in their demand for new elections, on their path toward Europe and freedom, and in their fight for the values that the EU flag represents," the German MEP concluded.
