The European Council has published its report on enlargement, which also addresses Georgia.
The enlargement report states that the European Union is ready to support the Georgian people on their European path while reiterating concerns regarding the course chosen by the government.
The report expresses regret over the Georgian government's recent decision to halt the country’s EU accession process until 2028 and strongly condemns violence against peaceful demonstrators, media representatives, and politicians.
“In light of the latest European Council conclusions, the [EU] Council reaffirms the EU’s readiness to support the Georgian people on their European path.
At the same time, it [the Council] reiterates the EU’s serious concerns regarding the course chosen by the Georgian government, including the adoption of the ‘Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence,’ as well as other legislative initiatives that contradict the EU's core values and principles and represent a setback to the steps outlined by the European Commission for candidate status.
The [EU] Council recalls that, in June and October 2024, the European Council noted that actions of this nature undermine Georgia’s European path, effectively halting the accession process.
The [EU] Council is dismayed by the Georgian government’s recent decision to halt the country’s EU accession process until 2028.
The Council strongly condemns violence against peaceful demonstrators, media representatives, and politicians.
Georgian officials must respect the freedoms of assembly and expression and refrain from the use of force. All acts of violence must be investigated, and those responsible must be held accountable,” the report states.
