Today, we are taking steps to hold the Georgian authorities accountable for their violent repression of peaceful protests, Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said in response to the European Commission’s decision to propose to the European Council to suspend visa-free travel for Georgian diplomats and officials.
“This sends a clear message to the Georgian authorities that they cannot suppress opposition voices or restrict freedom of expression without consequences. We have already reduced political contacts and we have redirected funding from the authorities to the Georgian people, civil society and independent media. We will continue to stand with the Georgian people on their path to the EU. Sanctions against Georgia are also on the table and we will continue to consider additional measures,” Kallas noted.
